What are the conditions like for a marathon in Bissau?

A marathon held on 1 February in Bissau took place under almost perfect tropical conditions. While the early morning start at a pleasant 20°C seemed ideal, temperatures rose slowly during the race… , but the morning coolness remained with the athletes for a long time.
As the event takes place in the middle of the dry season, the humidity is comparatively low at around 40%, which makes the temperatures seem very bearable.
For photographers, a cloudless sky and intense sunshine would guarantee great photos. For the athletes, the early start was a strategic decision to ensure they could complete the race successfully. The early start was therefore essential.
The runners faced a warm, dusty run that required discipline in heat management and drinking water intake in order to reach the finish line in good health. But everything went well, and so there will be another Bissau Marathon in 2027, on 2 February…

Guinea-Bissau has officially solidified its place on the map of world-class sporting destinations. Under the vibrant sun of West Africa, the First International Tourism Marathon recently celebrated a spectacular debut, organized by the visionary teams at Fogadventure and Kassumaytours in close collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts.

The marathon will become an annual tourist attraction from 2027 onwards

The event, which took place on February 1, 2026, was far more than a race; it was a global gathering of cultures. Local and international athletes and adventure-seekers from many different nations—including the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Poland, Thailand, and Nigeria—converged in Bissau to experience the country’s unique blend of colonial history and raw, natural beauty.

Recognizing the immense potential of sports tourism to showcase the “hidden gem” of the Atlantic coast, the Government of Guinea-Bissau has pledged its full support for the initiative.
In a recent meeting with members of Fogadventure and Kassumaytours, the Ministry of Tourism expressed a strong commitment to making this marathon a cornerstone of the country’s annual cultural calendar.
Save the date: The next Bissau Marathon will happen on 2 February 2027

Whether you are a competitive runner or a traveler looking for an authentic African experience, this event promises to be an unforgettable journey through one of the continent’s most captivating landscapes.
