Air India has recently reintroduced VT – EXN (A320neo), its first retrofitted aircraft, back into service. It is a significant step in the ongoing transformation. This aircraft, the first of the 27 A320neos that Air India inherited when it took over, is undergoing a complete retrofit according to the new Air India standard.
The retrofit includes new seating, carpets and curtains, as well as a new cabin ambience. It also includes a three-class configuration, a new paint job with the airline’s branding and livery, and a new cabin atmosphere.
Air India sent VT-EXN for retrofitting as part of its broader plan to upgrade their fleet last year. This initiative is part the USD 400 million retrofit project launched by the Tata Group. It aims to modernise all of the airline’s legacy narrowbody and broadbody aircraft.
VT-EXN and the remaining A320neos will operate on domestic routes as well as short-haul international flights. These aircraft along with 14 A320neos as well as more legacy aircraft such 40 widebody aircraft B787 and 777 will undergo a makeover.
The retrofit of all 27 A320neos is expected to finish by the third quarter in 2025. Over 3,500 new seats will be installed for Economy Class, 600 for Premium Economy, and 200 for Business Class. The refurbishment will include 450 meters premium leather, 15,000 metres of high-quality fabrics, and 4,000 metres of plush carpeting.
The retrofitted A320neo includes eight Business Class seats and 24 Premium Economy seats that offer extra legroom. It also has 132 comfortable economy seats. These aircraft will have a refreshed interior, with modern features such as USB ports, PED Holders, and wider seat pitches, which will enhance the overall passenger experience. Retrofitting Air India’s widebody aircraft will also be part of the retrofit programme. The first B787 aircraft is scheduled to be retrofitted next month.
