AirAsia X (AAX), Asia’s leading long-haul low-cost carrier, announced a strategic collaboration with the Kenya Tourism Board, aimed at enhancing connectivity between Asia and Africa and driving tourism growth for both regions. The Route Marketing collaboration coincides the upcoming launch by AAX of its new direct flights from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Nairobi. Four weekly flights will begin on 15 November 2024.
The collaboration between AAX Kenya Tourism Board and AAX includes joint promotional activities and coordinated marketing campaigns. It also includes collaborative efforts to improve travel experiences. It aims to use the strengths of each organisation to attract more visitors and stimulate economic development in both countries.
Nairobi is a major hub for the East African Community’s (EAC) tourism strategy. The region has a goal of attracting over 14 million tourists per year by 2025. The new flights are expected to enhance Nairobi’s image as a gateway city for regional and international travel. This will drive economic benefits and promote cultural exchange.
This direct route, which will allow Kenyans to fly-through to Asia’s most popular destinations via Kuala Lumpur, is also expected to play a major role. This new route, which is in line with Malaysia’s Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign will also help to boost Malaysia’s appeal as an international travel destination that offers diverse experiences. Kuala Lumpur is a key gateway to Malaysia for tourists coming from Nairobi. They will have direct access to the country’s vibrant attractions including its cultural landmarks and scenic landscapes.
Benyamin Ismail said:
“We are excited about launching our new direct route next month to Nairobi.”
This is a significant milestone in our quest to connect Asia and Africa, and opens up new travel options between the continents. Our Route Marketing collaboration with the Kenya Tourism Board shows our commitment to promoting tourism and expanding travel opportunities.
This new route is expected to play a key role in the growth of Kenya’s tourism and create new connections for travelers. Nairobi will be accessible from our other major routes, including Australia and China. It will provide new adventures in Africa as well as enhanced travel options via Kuala Lumpur. This route not strengthens our global networks but also supports the goals of both Kenyan and Malaysian tourism.”
June Chepkemei CEO of Kenya Tourism Board stated that the collaboration would lead to a substantial increase in tourism numbers. “This enhanced connectivity is expected to stimulate economic growth, create new opportunities for local business, and promote Kenya as a top destination for travellers from Asia. By making it easier to reach Nairobi, the country expects increased tourism revenue, and stronger cultural exchanges, which will benefit both Kenya’s tourism industry and its broader economic sector.
“The Asia Pacific Region is a critical source market for Kenya.”
In 2023, the region welcomed over 320,000 visitors, with India, China, and Japan being the main drivers. “Our goal is to increase the number of tourists visiting Kenya from Malaysia, and other regional destinations.”
