LocalCircles has released a survey that shows that travelers’ confidence is shaken after an unprecedented wave of terrorist threats targeting Indian airlines. The survey shows that 29 percent of Indian air travellers will likely reconsider or change their upcoming travel plans in the next month if threats continue. Over the past two weeks, Indian airlines have faced more than 400 threats. These threats have disrupted flight schedules and forced emergency landings. They also triggered increased security checks.
The recent threats—60 received in a single day on October 28—have escalated concerns within the aviation industry and prompted a response from India’s top government officials. In a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about the issue and stressed the need for an “all government” approach in combating this threat.
In the meantime, the Ministry of Information Technology, (MeitY), has directed social media sites to intensify their efforts in removing content that poses a hoax and to comply with reporting requirements under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. These measures are designed to stop misinformation, and hold individuals responsible for content that may endanger the safety of the public or national security.
Legislative Action to Discourage Bomb Threat Pranksters
In response to a recent rash of bomb threat incidents, the government is considering legislative action to prevent further incidents. K Rammohan Naidu announced recently that the Aircraft Security Rules, and the Suppression Of Unlawful Acts of Safety of Civil Aviation Act of 1982 could be amended.
These changes would introduce harsher penalties, such as travel bans, to those found guilty of spreading hoax threats. The government hopes that these measures will prevent more disruptions in travel and protect the aviation sector.
Travellers becoming more cautious amid increasing bomb threats
LocalCircles conducted an online survey to see how recent events affect travel plans. Over 15,000 respondents from India’s 297 districts participated in the survey. It revealed that many Indian travelers are now rethinking flights. While 25% of respondents indicated that they would continue to travel without extra caution, 46% said they would travel according to plan but remain vigilant. However, 9 percent of travellers surveyed indicated that they might alter their plans, while 8 percent confirmed they would do so, citing safety concerns due to the ongoing threats.
For the 12 percent of travellers who already altered their plans, recent threats have created enough uncertainty to warrant immediate changes, often resulting in costs and logistical inconveniences. Another 17 per cent are seriously considering altering their travel if threats continue. This indicates a growing reluctance of people to fly.
Survey Results Reflect Wider Concerns
LocalCircles, a survey that gathered responses from a wide range of demographics, including 61 percent men and 39 percent women, paints the picture of widespread fear. Participants came from all over India. 45 per cent of participants lived in Tier 1 cities. 29 per cent resided in Tier 2 cities. 26 per cent were from smaller towns or rural areas. The survey, conducted exclusively by verified citizens on LocalCircles, provided a solid perspective on the attitudes of air travellers.
Future Flight Security and Safety for Passengers
The recent explosion of bomb threats has created significant challenges for airlines. They are now operating under stricter security protocols in order to ensure passenger safety. Airlines are implementing strict post-landing security checks, sometimes delaying the disembarkation of passengers, and implementing additional screenings in response to passenger concerns.
Many flights have been delayed or cancelled, and passengers who continue their travel will face longer security clearances. This will add further inconvenience to their trip. Both airlines and authorities hope that as the government intensifies its response, stricter legal measures will help restore traveller confidence.
