Cebu, a beautiful island province in the Philippines with white-sand beaches and stunning natural scenery, is known for its incredible diving. The island is a haven for relaxation and adventure, but also has a booming tourist industry thanks to its natural beauty. I spent five days on Cebu, and loved it. I knew you’d love it too! You can use my Cebu itinerary as inspiration for your own trip.

This Cebu travel guide takes you on a journey of unforgettable experiences, from canyon adventures and waterfalls, to sardine diving spectacular and beach relaxation.
This itinerary will be based on a South Cebu itinerary, since my home base and the majority of activities were in the South.

Cebu 5-day itinerary

Day 1: Land at Cebu and travel to Moalboal

Moalboal can be reached after arriving at Cebu City. Moalboal, located on the Southwestern tip Cebu Island, is a popular town that will serve as your base for your Cebu itinerary. The best adventures and attractions in Cebu can be found in the South, so it’s worth staying in this area to save time.

The bus ride takes 3-4 hours from Cebu City, but tickets are only $3 USD. The journey is worth it. The bus may or may not be air-conditioned, and will stop at different places along the route. You could also opt for a private transfer to enjoy a more comfortable trip.

Day 2: Canyoneering Kawasan Fall

Kawasan Falls is a 45-minute drive away. The trip to the falls takes about 45 minutes and you can reach it by bus, taxi, or rented car. Kawasan Falls, a popular destination on Cebu and one of our favorites, is a must-see. The river water is a brilliant turquoise, flowing through dense vegetation in a jungle canyon.

The colours are vibrant, and the scenery is breathtaking. Many travellers prefer to relax and take in the beauty of the falls by setting up a picnic table next to the largest and lowest of the three main falls.

Day 3: Snorkel With Sardines & Turtles

Cebu, in particular Moalboal is known for its incredible diving opportunities. The marine life that lives in the water surrounding the island is incredible. On day 3, take your time to wake up and then head over Panagsama Beach to explore the underwater world. Moalboal’s year-round sardine runs are renowned for their almost guaranteed sightings.

This phenomenon is natural and ethical. Sardines are protected by marine law and left untouched. Millions of sardines forming tightly packed shoals create vast, sparkling balls which wiggle and wind through the clear water. Snorkeling with these sardine schools is an incredible experience.

Day 4: Waterfalls & Osmeña Peak

Prepare yourself for a busy morning by getting up early and eating breakfast. On day 4, we recommend renting a vehicle to give you the most freedom and flexibility. Alternatively, if you’d prefer someone else to take the wheel, you can book a Osmeña Peak and Kawasan Falls guided tour. Hop in the car, and head south toward Osmeña Peak.

Cambais Falls is only a small detour on the route to Osmeña Peak, and one that’s certainly worth making. The falls offer a similar experience to Kawasan Falls with a different scenery. The falls are a great place to cool off mid-way during a long journey.

Day 5: Travel back Cebu City or Oslob

You can decide to either head back to Cebu City or continue your journey south to Oslob. There, you will have a rare opportunity to swim alongside whale sharks.

Swim with the Whale Sharks at Oslo

If you choose to head to Oslob to experience swimming with whale sharks, then get an early start and make the 2 ½ hour journey south from Moalboal. Oslob is located on the southwestern part of Cebu and is one of most famous places in the world for snorkeling with whale sharks. The practice involves feeding sharks to lure them in. This is a controversial practice.

Whale shark tourism can have both positive and negative consequences. These range from the supposed conservation of the species, to unnatural patterns disrupting ecosystems.
Before you decide to take part in this once-in a lifetime experience, read up on the controversy surrounding it.

After spending the morning with whale sharks, drive 10 minutes to Tumalog waterfalls. These falls are some of the most admired on the island for their turquoise waters and idyllic surroundings. The mossy formations of the rocks and the gentle misty stream create an ethereal environment that’s worth experiencing.
