Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), under the leadership of GMR Airports announced plans to refurbish Terminal 2 of Delhi Airport. This terminal was originally built by Airports Authority of India in India (AAI) over 40 years ago. This comprehensive upgrade aims to modernise the airport and accommodate the growing demand for passengers, ensuring T2 remains a top-notch facility in the global aviation industry.

The refurbishment forms part of DIAL’s strategy to create an exclusive hub for travellers from India and Southeast Asia. The terminal, and its apron which has served passengers for more than four decades, will undergo substantial upgrades to meet the future capacity requirements. DIAL expects the terminal to reach its maximum capacity of passengers by FY 2025-2026, which will require these essential improvements.

Six Passenger Boarding Bridges with autonomous docking, the first in India, are key elements of the refurbishment. These PBBs are equipped with features like elevated ramps to allow wheelchair access, and adjustable cabins for a seamless journey. The terminal will receive mechanical and electric upgrades, including new HVAC system for better air quality. It will also have enhanced fire safety measures.

Delhi Airport will be the only airport in India whose terminals can handle 100 million passengers annually once the expansion work is completed. The government has asked Delhi Airport to study global best practices in scheduling to ensure international and domestic operations complement one another and provide enhanced connectivity at Delhi Airport. This is essential for India’s first international hub.

Along with smart washrooms, the improvements will also include modern ceilings, skylights, and advanced flooring. Canopies are being added to the forecourt area to ensure passenger comfort in the monsoon. The Flight Information Display System will also be upgraded to high-resolution displays, allowing for greater accuracy. Special signage will be installed to assist passengers with reduced mobility.

Videh Kumar Jairuriar, CEO of DIAL commented on the project: “The refurbishment is crucial for enhancing passenger experiences and meeting future demand.”

These upgrades are crucial to Delhi Airport’s long-term goal of being a leading hub both for domestic and foreign travellers.

The refurbishment should begin in FY2025-26 with completion expected during Q2 of the same financial year. During this time, Terminal 2 will be temporarily closed for 4 to 6 month. Terminal 1 can accommodate the extra passenger traffic while ensuring minimal disruption.
