For the first time in two years, an Emirates flight landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which had suspended flights in 2021 because of unresolved problems, including the airline’s trapped funds in Nigeria, has resumed operations.

Flight EK 783 – a Boeing 777 300ER – touched down at MMIA’s old terminal at 3:32 PM. The flight was greeted with empty seats, indicating a subdued start to operations.

The exact number of passengers could not yet be confirmed, but passengers who spoke with a correspondent said that the flight was not fully occupied.

“The flight was not at all full but as always, the service was very good.”

“I think it’s understandable, as this is the first flight in many years,” said a passenger.

Airport officials reported that departing passengers were processed in the newly opened terminal while arriving passengers were directed to the Old Terminal. The Boeing 777-392ER has a capacity of 392 seats, but the small number of passengers on board suggests the airline will need some time to regain its momentum in the Nigerian market after an extended hiatus.

The resumption of international operations was a significant step towards restoring the full operation at MMIA.
