Tim Clark, the President of Emirates, a Dubai-based carrier, announced on Wednesday that it will spend approximately 5 billion dollars to refitt 220 of its aircraft, in order to maintain its network. The industry is struggling with delivery delays for newer planes.

Clark told reporters, “We have no other choice. This is the only option we have to sustain and grow our network.”

Air India is one of the other airlines that are upgrading their aircraft. They are working to refitt its existing fleet, in order to maintain routes and improve the customer experience.

Clark said Emirates has always sought to be in the forefront of product development. However, it had to compromise due to delays from aircraft manufacturers and take matters its own way.

“The engineering teams are working as fast as they can to turn these aircraft around as soon as possible.”

Clark told reporters:

“We have most of the components now that we need.”

Clark, who has been a vocal critic of Boeing ever since a door blowout occurred on an Alaska Airlines flight in last year, said that he hadn’t yet met Boeing’s new CEO Kelly Ortberg, and he wasn’t sure of any changes to the delivery schedule.

He added that the company is not optimistic that Boeing 777X deliveries will be made in October 2025 and it is unsure when it will meet production ramp up requirements.
