RIX Riga Airport announces the first stage of construction tender to select a contractor in support of the European Union funds for the reconstruction of Apron 4.

The funding contract was signed with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) for the project titled “Reconstruction of Apron 4 at State Joint Stock Company ‘Riga International Airport’ to ensure dual-use TEN-T infrastructure for civilian and military purposes.”

The project aims to reconstruct over 80 000 square metres of the apron’s hard surface, create aircraft stands in ten different configurations for Class A – E aircraft, and establish taxiing and service roads. The reconstruction will allow for additional aircraft stands, increase military mobility (which is especially important in today’s geopolitical climate), and expand the cargo service area.

A substation with independent feeds will also be built to meet the latest EU requirements for Apron 4 lighting, and power supply for aircraft stands. The project involves the creation of storage areas for aircraft service equipment, the installation and reconstruction of lighting masts, floodlights and lighting systems, as well as the installation of new video surveillance and rainwater drainage systems.

The deadline for the submission of proposals for the initial stage of the construction bid is April 8, 2019. The reconstruction of Apron 4 should be completed by 2027.

Riga Airport has a development strategy that includes creating a Cargo City around Aprons 4 & 5. In 2020 a newly built specialized cargo service area will become operational in this region, followed by DHL’s Regional Shipment Processing and Logistics Centre a year later. The national airline airBaltic also built a cargo handling logistics centre called Baltic Cargo Hub. Riga Airport currently handles 37% air cargo in the Baltic States.
