Ethiopian Airlines has announced that it will no longer operate flights to Asmara (Eritrea).
The airline announced that it will no longer offer flights to the Eritrean Capital as of September 3. This is due to the “very difficult operating circumstances” the airline encountered in Eritrea, which were beyond its control.
Ethiopian Airlines has said that it will do everything in its power to rebook passengers affected by the incident on other airlines without additional costs or, alternatively to refund all tickets paid and booked.
The airline’s CEO, Mesfin Tasew, told a news conference that the Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority had frozen Ethiopian Airlines’ bank account.
The Eritrean government had previously threatened to suspend flights from Ethiopian Airlines by the end of September, according to Reuters.
In 2018, flights between the two countries resumed after 20 years of suspension. Ethiopia and Eritrea have a lukewarm relationship that has become increasingly antagonistic after a 30-year war that ended with the 2018 peace accord.
