As reported by the Wittenberg police station, an unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday at midday in Wörpen, a district of the town of Coswig in the east of the Wittenberg district in Saxony-Anhalt.

A bus was stuck on a dirt track there on its way to a Christmas market. This muddy mess was a field for the passengers instead of mulled wines!

A farmer used his tractor to try and free the frozen pensioners stuck in the mud. The officials praise the villager’s spontaneous help.

Tractor driver tries rescuing stuck bus in Saxony Anhalt

Officers from the Möllensdorf Christmas market patrol were informed at 1.55 p.m. on Sunday by the person in charge of the local Christmas market that a coach had got stuck on a dirt track in Wörpen. Unfortunately, the bus driver’s navigation system had shown the wrong route to Möllensdorf.

There was no way to turn around on the narrow, muddy dirt roads – the 27 passengers had been stuck. The police reported that the market’s organizers could have reached a tractor-driver by trying their luck. The tractor of the farmer was too small to move the bus.

Bus recovery: Larger tractor not available from agricultural cooperative

Unfortunately, the agricultural cooperative did not have a larger tractor at that time. The bus driver was forced to call a towing service with heavy equipment.

Police report. Local residents offered to help the passengers. The passengers were very happy, despite the fact that they were frozen. One family drove the pensioners in their car to the Christmas Market. Eventually, the passengers were picked up and taken to the destination by a bus that was parked at the Christmas Market.

Police thank the villagers for their spontaneous and uncomplicated help

The officers reported that two large emergency vehicles belonging to a towing service were still working on recovering the bus when they approached the country road again at about 5.30 p.m. The experts told them that the recovery operation could take a long time.

The officials concluded by praising the villagers:

“A big thank you to the spontaneously helping residents from Wörpen and the bus from Jerichower Land for being able to help the passengers so easily!”
