Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister, inaugurated Asia’s largest double-decker structure on Saturday. It is also the continent’s very first four-tiered structure. The engineering marvel near Gaddigodam Gurudwara, on National Highway, integrates the four different levels of transport, with a Metro at the top and a flyover below it. Finally, the road is at the bottom.
The 5.6km, double-decker Kamptee Road Flyover from LIC Square Automotive Square, built by Maha Metro and National Highway Authority of India at a cost of INR573 crore, has now surpassed the previous record held by Nagpur’s 3,14 km Wardha Road Flyover. Both projects were benchmarks in double-decker construction, but the latest achievement is a new milestone with its innovative four tier configuration.
The project was initiated in 2019 and faced many challenges, including the acquisition of private property in the busy Sadar area. The flyover was completed despite these obstacles and is a significant milestone for urban transportation.
Gadkari, who spoke at the inauguration of the project, highlighted the potential for adopting ultra-reinforced cement technology, which is widely adopted in Singapore and Malaysia.
He said: “I’ve proposed this technology, and Prime Minister NarendraModi has given me the task of using it for Parliament’s Vista, as well as future Metro projects.”
“This could reduce construction costs 20 per cent.”
Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced an investment opportunity of INR 60,000 crores in West Bengal. This is contingent on the state government’s willingness to resolve land-handover issues. He stressed the importance of depoliticizing rail projects to expedite the 61 pending initiatives. Vaishnaw also highlighted the significant advancements made in railway infrastructure and safety under Prime Minister Modi.
The flyover promises a drastic reduction in travel time. It will allow motorists to cover a distance of 20 km (Kamptee-Nagpur airport) in only 20 minutes. MahaMetro is already working on the design of a dedicated entrance to the flyover. Gadkari mentioned that residents in Sadar have requested a dedicated entry. A concrete reconstruction is also planned for the road under the flyover that leads to Kamptee, funded by Central Road Fund (CRF).
Gadkari praised MahaMetro as well as NHAI and local officials such Abhijeet Chudhari and Vipin Itankar for their efforts to complete this ambitious project. He emphasized that NHAI has invested between INR 1,300 crore and INR 1,400 crore in Nagpur’s three major flyovers – Kamptee Road, Wardha Road, and Pardi.
The minister praised Nagpur Metro as well for setting a benchmark in Metro construction by achieving costs of 350cr/kilometre which are significantly lower than other Indian cities. Gadkari also announced plans to redevelop Gaddigodam Market in order to improve traffic flow.
This flyover is a great example of modern engineering, combining innovation and functionality in order to meet the needs of urban transportation.
