Indian Railways has contracted Germany’s TUV SUD to conduct a third party safety audit for India’s first hydrogen-powered train. Officials who are familiar with the plan expect trials to begin in December 2020 for this rolling material.

India will be the fifth nation to operate hydrogen powered trains. In addition, five Hydrogen-Fuel Cell Based Tower Vehicles (Maintenance Vehicles) are being developed. Each unit will cost INR 10 crore.

A senior official told ET that “Indian Railways will have 35 train under the Hydrogen For Heritage initiative, at an estimated cost INR 80 crores each train with another INR70 crores investment per route in ground infrastructure on various heritage or mountainous routes.”

The official said, “The System Integration Unit Battery and two fuel units synchronization test have been successfully performed.”

Northeast Frontier Railway has expanded its network in order to improve connectivity in the Northeastern region. This is done by promoting tourism with initiatives such as Vistadome coaches and Bharat Gaurav Trains. The railway offers new amenities like executive lounges and retiring rooms, as well as a scenic hub near Bogibeel Bridge on the Brahmaputra Riverfront.

The refuelling facility at Jind will have a 3,000 kg storage of hydrogen, a hydrogen compressor and two hydrogen dispensers, both with pre-cooler integrated, to allow for quick refuelling.

A pilot project is also underway to retrofit an existing Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU) rake with a Hydrogen fuel cell, along the necessary ground infrastructure. This train will operate on the Jind to Sonipat section of Northern Railway. “Integrations of prototype trains are planned in Integral Coach Factory Chennai,” said the official. The hydrogen for this train in Haryana is provided by a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM), located in Jind. GreenH Electrolysis has released a press release indicating that the electrolyser in question will operate continuously and generate approximately 430 kg/day hydrogen.
