India’s largest airline has become the largest foreign carrier to operate from Sri Lanka. This is a significant milestone for its international expansion. The airline currently operates a total of 54 flights a week between Sri Lanka’s Colombo, Jaffna, and four key Indian cities, including Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. IndiGo’s growth strategy aims to strengthen its global presence by enhancing connectivity.

Vinay Malhotra commented: “As the largest international carrier operating out of Sri Lanka with connections to four Indian Cities, we are proud to celebrate this milestone which underscores our commitment towards strengthening India-Sri Lanka bilateral relations.”

By enhancing air connections, we hope to stimulate tourism and promote economic growth. Our direct flights increase travel options for our customers and provide them with greater flexibility and convenience. We are committed to providing seamless, cost-effective and punctual travel experiences across our network.

The Chairman of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau acknowledged IndiGo’s contribution, saying, “I warmly congrats IndiGo for becoming the largest carrier outside Sri Lanka. It is a significant milestone that reflects IndiGo’s commitment to enhancing connections and strengthening ties between both our nations.”

IndiGo’s increased frequency, which includes its operations to Jaffna highlights its commitment to the development of Northern Province, fostering tourism, economic growth, and cultural exchange.

The tourism industry has already benefited from the increase in flights between India & Sri Lanka. Early in 2024, India will account for 200,000 visitors, which will provide a significant boost to the local economies. Colombo, an important hub for tourism and business, and Jaffna with its rich history and culture both benefit from the enhanced connectivity.
