Japan has recently updated its passport design to improve security and prevent forgery. The new passports are available starting on 24 March 2025. The plastic photo page will have an embedded microchip, making it harder for counterfeiters. This updated design comes with several advanced features which increase its security.
The beautiful pattern
The photo page of the new passport includes a decorative sakura (cherry blossom) pattern. It is visible when you tilt the passport. A crane watermark is also included on the passport, which is a symbol of Japan and adds an additional layer of authenticity. These design elements are meant to make the passport more difficult to fake and easier to authenticate for authorities.
The Foreign Ministry emphasized that these changes were part of Japan’s ongoing effort to modernize and preserve the integrity of official documents. The new passport process will take slightly more time than before because it is now produced by the National Printing Bureau which also prints Japan’s banknotes.
This shift will extend the production time to around two weeks as opposed to the current one week processing time. Currently, passport photos are printed by municipal government offices or Japanese diplomatic missions abroad. This allows for faster turnaround times.
Advanced security
The new design reflects Japan’s commitment to combating the sophistication of passport fraud worldwide. By incorporating advanced security measures like the embedded chip and plastic photo page, the country aims at making it more difficult for fake passports to pass unnoticed.
The embedded chip increases the digital security of passports, protecting travelers against identity theft and fraud. The added security measures will provide travelers with peace of mind and reduce the risk for passport-related crimes.
The government has confirmed that the new design will gradually replace current passports as the new system is introduced. These efforts demonstrate Japan’s proactive approach to combating passport fraud and ensuring the safety for its citizens when they travel abroad.
