The Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) announced on Wednesday that it had signed an agreement with the Sarawak government on the sale and transfer its MASwing airline. The deal is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
No financial details were disclosed. The deal follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 27, 2023 with the Sarawak-owned Hornbill Skyways Company to acquire a major stake in MASwings.
The transfer should be completed by the year’s end. MAG is working closely with all parties, including shareholder Khazanah Nasional Berhad. This will ensure a seamless and compliant transition, as well as compliance with all legal and regulatory frameworks,” MAG stated in a release.
MAG has stated that MASwings will operate as usual during the transition period under its purview. Flight schedules will not be disrupted.
State media Bernama has reported that the Sarawak Government renamed MASwings AirBorneo. It is expected that the airline will operate as a fully-service carrier.
Abang Johari, the state premier, said: “By implementing this strategic move, we are positioning Sarawak to be an aviation hub for Borneo as well as a gateway into ASEAN. This will open doors to new opportunities, and foster greater connectivity and access to both domestic as well as international destinations.”
