The iconic Matheran and Neral mini-toy train has resumed its services after a brief break during the monsoon. The train, which has a history of more than 150 years, covers around 20 kilometers of journey and offers people a scenic way through the small mountain station.
Swapnil Nala, the Chief of Public Relations (CRPO) at Central Railways stated that the train was stopped on the 8th of June due to monsoon season. It was then restarted in November.
“This train covers only a short distance of about 20 kilometers.”
It has 236 sharp bends over which passengers can also enjoy the ride. It is primarily narrow gauge train and has a nearly 150-year history. It takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to reach Matheran from Neral.
The CRPO also stated that the train has six carriages, one first class coach and four second classes coaches.
The CRPO said that passengers have the option to buy first-class tickets and second-class tickets. Prices are reasonable for passengers on a journey or unique journey.
The train transports an average of 600-700 people per day. The CRPO stated that the train was loved by children as it offered them a fun and exciting way to travel in the vehicle-free Matheran hills area.
Swapnil Nila said, “This train allows all its passengers to enjoy the scenic backdrop of Matheran and Neral,” Swapnil added. One of the passengers stated that they also enjoyed the ride on the first day.
The passengers were very happy with the experience. “I was bored before because the train was a little late, but when I got my ticket and saw the views while in the car, it was really good,” they said.
Another 16-year-old passenger said:
“I came from Mumbai specifically to travel on this train.”
I think that anyone who lives in Maharashtra should visit Matheran, if they’ve never been to a hill station. This toy railroad takes 2 hours 30 mins to complete from Neral. The elevation initially starts at 40 meters and then steadily rises up to an altitude of 850 meters in Matheran.
Aman Lodge to Matheran shuttle service is also available. Two extra services are added to the weekend schedule to accommodate tourists.
The CRPO announced that no other modes of transportation are allowed between Aman lodge and Matheran except for taxis, e-rickshaws or taxis permitted by the Econological Zone.
