Cagayan De Oro, a major city in the south of the Philippines, has announced plans to revive the traditional pottery and weaving industry as part of an effort to promote local trade and tourism.

Joyleen Balaba said the city council was working with local artisans and officials to revive the pottery business, known locally as kolon.

Balaba also added that the city is gathering more data about traditional weaving practices in rural districts, particularly with Indigenous communities.

They want to make these crafts unique to the city and products that have great potential for export.

Bulua was the center of artisanal pottery production in the city for over three decades. The clay was sourced locally, by the potters and the community.

The district held an annual Kolon Festival to celebrate the craftsmanship and expertise of local artisans.
