Ras Al Khaimah, or RAK, is rapidly becoming a popular destination for Indian tourists. The emirate offers breathtaking landscapes, luxurious accommodation, and rich cultural experience. The emirate is expected to see a dramatic increase of 103 per cent in wedding-related revenues in 2023 from Indian tourists, confirming it as a top destination for destination marriages.

Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority is actively enhancing their wedding offerings, offering comprehensive destination incentives including free visas to wedding parties, and tailored packages for couples.. These initiatives are designed to streamline the wedding planning process and highlight RAK’s status as a top destination for memorable wedding celebrations. They also aim to tap into the growing demand of Indian couples who want both luxury and cultural riches in their special day.

Raki Phillips (CEO of the Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, RAKTDA) shared his insights in an exclusive interview with ETTravelWorld. He discussed the emirate’s growing appeal, the significant increase in tourist arrivals and ambitious sustainability plans. RAK is expected to see a 20 percent increase in Indian tourists in 2023. This is due to direct flights and its proximity to major Indian cities.

Record-breaking Wedding Tourism Revenue

Phillips began his presentation by discussing the factors that are driving the surge of Indian tourism to Ras Al Khaimah. “Ras Al Khaimah offers an extraordinary combination of adventure, luxurious, and natural beauty,” Phillips explained. The emirate has a geographical advantage as it is only a 45-minute drive away from Dubai International Airport. Direct flights are also available from cities such Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Calicut. “Indian visitors include families, adventurers, and wellness seekers. They are all increasingly attracted by the emirate’s unique charm,” Phillips noted. RAK is attracting more young couples on honeymoons, attracted by its tranquil landscapes and luxurious offerings.

The destination’s new reputation as a hotspot for weddings has also contributed to its growing popularity. Wedding-related revenue from India is expected to grow by a staggering 103 per cent in 2023. Phillips continued,

“The stunning natural scenery and world-class hotels make it an ideal location for couples seeking to have unforgettable wedding experiences.”

Looking deeper into the demographic trends Phillips revealed that Indian tourists stay in Ras Al Khaimah on average for four to six days. This period of time is in line with their desire for a mixture of relaxation, adventure and cultural experiences. Families love the emirate’s family-friendly attractions and resorts. These include water parks, cultural experiences and outdoor activities. Adventure travelers are also increasingly drawn to Ras Al Khaimah, including hiking in the Jebel-Jais mountains and water sports. He said that the natural landscapes offered a wide range of thrilling activities.

Expanding Adventure and Wellness Offers

Phillips cited the Jebel-Jais zip line as well as the cultural experiences available at the Suwaidi Pearl Farm. The emirate is home to a variety of activities that cater for different interests. “Desert activities like camel trekking, dune bashing and horseback riding are major attractions,” he explained. Aerial tours such as hot-air ballooning and light-sport aircraft tours are also gaining in popularity. They allow visitors to experience the breathtaking scenery from above. For those who are interested in cultural immersion, heritage places like Al Jazeera Al Hamra or Dhayah Fort provide rich insights into Ras Al Khaimah’s 7,000-year history.

RAKTDA’s efforts to promote Ras Al Khaimah internationally resulted in a 8% increase in the total number of visitors annually, reaching a milestone of 1,22 million. International visitors also saw a 24% increase. The Emirate saw a significant increase in hotel occupancy reaching 74%, a growth of 12 percentages points year-onyear.

Phillips believes Ras Al Khamiah has carved a niche for Indian weddings. “What really sets it apart is the diverse landscape,” he said, highlighting that the emirate offers everything from pristine beachfronts to desert oasis and majestic mountains. Historical sites are a great backdrop for couples looking for a unique wedding. Luxury resorts are a major contributor to this trend. They offer high-end facilities, and provide seamless event management. “The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority is a major player in this trend, offering destination incentives such as free visas for marriages, which makes the planning process seamless and comprehensive,” said Mr. Al Khaimah.

Commitment towards Sustainable Tourism

Phillips shared RAK’s vision of sustainable tourism leadership in 2025. “Sustainability underpins everything we do here at RAKTDA,” he stressed. The emirate made significant progress in this area. They recently achieved the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination Silver Certification as a testament to their commitment towards responsible tourism practices. “Our sustainable strategy integrates economics, environmental, cultural and social considerations in our development framework,” he explained. He also stressed the importance of preserving Ras Al Khaimah’s cultural heritage and natural beauty.

The Green Hotel Rating is a key initiative of RAKTDA, which aims at ensuring sustainable practices within the hospitality sector. Phillips stated that the goal was to reduce waste disposal by 50 per cent by 2025. He said this would be achieved by monitoring continuously. Phillips also highlighted plans to develop and preserve 20 heritage sites into key tourist attractions. Al Jazeera Al Hamra is a prime example. This historic pearl diving town, which is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List and is undergoing meticulous repairs, will become a significant part in Ras Al Khaimah’s tourist offerings.

Looking Ahead: Vision 2024 and Beyond

Phillips acknowledged India’s pivotal role in their strategy to attract 3.5 millions visitors by 2030.

“To ensure sustained expansion, we are improving connectivity with direct flight and expanding our tourism offering with more than 7,000 new rooms,” he stated.

These developments include prestigious names like Nobu, Wynn Al-Marjan Island, which cater to various segments including luxury, family holidays, and the growing destination wedding market.

The RAKTDA CEO revealed that the organization is launching targeted marketing campaigns, and strengthening partnerships with Indian wedding planners and event organizers in order to tap into Indian travellers’ evolving preferences. Phillips concluded his optimism by saying that Ras Al Khaimah is a destination for Indian tourists because of its unique blend of adventure and luxury.
