Abu Dhabi Airports announces that Zayed International Airport’s Northern Runway (13L/31R), has reopened sooner than expected. It is now fully functional for arrivals, departures and after a successfully completed rehabilitation project. The Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project resulted in a number of key upgrades. The project included reinforcing the runway and resurfacing it with 210,000 tonnes asphalt to increase durability and resilience.

In addition, there were major technological advancements, such as the installation of a redundant ground-visibility monitoring system, a modern Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) that allows for greater precision and the replacement over 1,200 halogen light fixtures with energy-efficient LEDs.

Abu Dhabi Airports has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability by switching to LED lighting. Upgrades to critical navigational system, such as the ILS and Runway Visible Range (RVR) ensure safety and efficiency of aircraft operations, especially in challenging weather conditions.

Saif Mohammed al Suwaidi (Director General of GCAA) praised the project. “The successful completion the North Runway Rehabilitation Project of Zayed International Airport reflects the strategic foresight Abu Dhabi Airports, but also the UAE’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in the aviation sector.

This project reaffirms that we are committed to enhancing the global status of UAE airports. It is in line with the GCAA as well as our national vision for long-term success.”

Sanjay Shirsat, the newly appointed chairman of City and Industrial Development Corporations (CIDCO), announced on Tuesday that the Air Force would conduct its first trial landing in the presence of PM Narendra Modi and Chief minister Eknath Shirsat at the Navi Mumbai International Airport on October 5, on the first of the two runways.

Elena Sorlini said, “The Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project was completed ahead of schedule as a result of meticulous planning and effective stakeholder collaboration. It is also a direct outcome of a steadfast commitment to operational excellence.” This enhanced infrastructure will allow us effectively manage the continuous increases in air demand and optimise airport traffic at AUH.”The airport will be able to better meet airline demand with the return to dual-runway operating. Abu Dhabi Airports operated at AUH with the Southern Runway only, ensuring that the increased air traffic was effectively managed. Daily operations continued uninterrupted, maintaining continuity and safety.

This achievement highlights Abu Dhabi Airports commitment to building aviation infrastructure which maintains the highest standards in safety and operation, further strengthening Zayed International Airport’s reputation as a global aviation hub.
