A serious accident on the A1 near Hamburg resulted in many injuries. The highway remains closed because it is not clear whether the bridge will hold up.

18 people were slightly hurt in a serious traffic crash on the A1 behind Hamburg’s Border near Stapelfeld early Monday morning. The German Press Agency (dpa) was informed by a spokesperson from the Integrated Regional Control Center South.

A truck carrying chicken manure crashed into a bridge at 5 am due to a blown tire. According to the police, the driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries.

Bridge inspection required before the A1 is closed completely

The impact spread chicken poop and tire fragments over a wide area of road, damaging seven vehicles. A large police contingent was on site to secure the accident scene.

A structural engineer has been called in to assess stability of the damaged Bridge. The highway will remain fully closed in both directions between the Barsbüttel and Stapelfeld junctions while this assessment continues.

Significant delays between Hamburg and Lübeck

The closure caused delays during the morning rush. Detours are difficult to make as alternate routes lead over the bridge that is currently closed. ADAC warns that drivers heading to Hamburg can expect delays up to two hours. Towards Lübeck, the time loss is currently at least 45 minutes.

Rescue workers tend to the injured

A large contingent of rescue workers, including volunteer fire departments from Barsbüttel, Stellau, Stemwarde and Hamwarde, as well as numerous ambulances from the district were deployed. A care center for injured people was set up.
