For fine dining: Persona
Persona is a fine-dining restaurant in central Stockholm that offers a mix of Nordic tradition and contemporary cuisine. The interior of the restaurant, inspired by mid-century Italian design, features natural wood and calming green tones, creating an inviting yet refined atmosphere. Guests can watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen.
The tasting menu is a collection of innovative and beautifully-presented dishes that emphasizes fresh, local ingredients. Standout offerings include a dish of “beef / chimichurri / shiso tempura” – fusion of Latin American and Japanese flavours. The dessert course brings together sweet treats like a cardamom croissant, a chocolate soufflé tart, and a cannelé, blending traditional French and Swedish influences.
Persona is distinguished by its attention to personal touches and detail. The restaurant creates a memorable dining experience, from the carefully chosen wine pairings to a Polaroid picture of guests as a final keepsake.
For superb seafood: Lisa Elmqvist Restaurant
Lisa Elmqvist is a must-visit for seafood lovers. Located in the historic Östermalms Saluhall, one of Stockholm’s most famous food markets, Lisa Elmqvist has been serving some of the freshest seafood in the city for over four generations. The restaurant is known for its commitment to sustainability and quality, with a menu that highlights what Sweden’s water has to offer.
Lisa Elmqvist’s heart lies in her simple but expertly prepared menu, which allows the freshness and quality of the ingredients shine through. Start with a Swedish classic, Skagen toast. It is a mixture of shrimps, dill and mayonnaise, served on toast and garnished by trout roe. You will not be disappointed with the steamed Halibut with butter-fried Chantarelles, beans, kohlrabi and salmon roe, as well as a Sandefjord Sauce flavoured with Dill.
The market hall is a lively place where diners can enjoy their meal surrounded by the sounds and sights of the food hall vendors. It’s an atmosphere that works whether you’re having a quick dinner or a leisurely lunch. It captures Stockholm’s culinary heritage and the timeless appeal of its markets.
For Thai cuisine: Rimlay Thaikök
Since the 1970s, there has been a significant immigration of Thais to Sweden. Many Thai restaurants have opened in Sweden. One to definitely try, despite its unassuming exterior, is Rimlay Thaikök, a beloved spot known for serving some of the most authentic Thai dishes at Naka Strand on the outskirts the city.
The menu features a variety of classic Thai dishes, which will transport you to Thailand. Start with the chicken satay and then for the main, the chicken masaman will not disappoint. It has powerful Thai flavors that will keep you coming back for more. (We loved it so much we came back twice!)
The restaurant’s relaxed, no-frills atmosphere is perfect for a meal with family or friends. Don’t be fooled, the food is always excellent despite the casual setting. Whether you’re a fan of Thai curries, noodle dishes, or stir-fries, Rimlay Thaikök is sure to deliver on all fronts, and at a very reasonable price point.
Flippin’ Burgers: the best burgers in the city
Flippin’ Burgers, located in Norrmalm, is the best place to find a burger in Stockholm. This laid-back eatery serves some of the most succulent burgers that I’ve ever tasted. Its success is no doubt due to its commitment and passion for making the perfect hamburger.
Flippin’ Burgers’ menu is refreshingly simple. Each item is carefully crafted for flavour. I chose the cricket burger which was described as “A Colorado Classic”. Cream cheese, caramelised onions, pickled red onions and jalapeño”, which I would wholeheartedly recommend. There is also a veggie Beond Burger option.
The restaurant has an American diner vibe and a relaxed retro vibe. The staff are friendly and attentive and the casual atmosphere makes it an ideal place for a relaxed meal. Pair your burger with their fries – and a thick, creamy milkshake if that’s your thing – and you’ve got yourself the ultimate comfort food experience.
To dine like a Viking: Restaurant Särimner
Last but not least… and for a dining experience that’s truly unlike any other, try the Birka glamping experience where you’ll get to dine like a Viking at Restaurant Särimner. This immersive dining event is inspired by Viking history, culture, and cuisine. The island of Birka, a trading centre during Viking times, is often regarded by many as the first Stockholm.
The dinner is included in the glamping experience, allowing you to enjoy Swedish dishes such as Classic Toast Skagen with a view of Lake Mälaren as the sun sets. The hearty mains included dishes such as red wine braised beef cheek with root vegetable gratin and asparagus, Särimner’s fish and seafood casserole, and glazed ribs with fries, all exceptionally cooked.
The food is just part of the experience. The restaurant’s interior is designed to resemble an old Viking longhouse. There are communal tables with animal hides, and the whole place has a Viking feel. This is more than just a meal — it’s an opportunity a very special setting long after the majority of tourists have left the island.
