Thailand will welcome more than 35,000,000 international tourists by 2024, exceeding the government’s goal, as it strives to revive the country’s sluggish economic growth, officials announced Monday.

The vital tourism sector of the nation accounts for almost 20% of its GDP, but has been struggling in the wake of Covid-19 and changing traveller behaviour.

The Ministry of Sports and Tourism estimates that more than 35 millions visitors will visit the kingdom by 2024. That’s around four million less than the 2019 pre-pandemic record.

China has regained its position as the number one source of visitors to Thailand, after a decline following the pandemic. More than six million people visited Thailand last year.

According to Sorawongthienthong, tourism minister, the kingdom – known for its pristine temples and beaches – will generate more than USD 46 billion (1.6 trillion baht) from tourist spending by 2024.

The Thai government introduced a variety of measures under former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to attract foreigners, including a visa-free program for Chinese and Indian tourists.

After exceeding its 35 million tourist target in 2024, the Government has set a goal of 39 million visitors for 2025. The World Bank estimates that the country’s pre-pandemic level will be exceeded in 2025. However, tourists are spending less money than before.
