Thailand is preparing to launch its global eVisa system on January 1, 2025. The revised system will enable travellers to apply for visas via the internet at 94 Thai embassies or consulates around the globe. This will eliminate the need to submit lengthy paperwork or make in-person visits.
What is Thailand’s e-visa?
With the Thailand eVisa System in place, candidates can apply for visas online. The technology allows visa fees to be paid online in 15 languages for most countries. The process will be simplified for visitors, students, and workers as they can receive their visas electronically.
Benefits of e-visa
The eVisa system has many advantages for both travelers and Thai authorities.
- Convenience: Travelers may apply at any time, from anywhere.
- Reduced paperwork: Eliminates the requirement for physical documentation.
- Speed up entry procedures
- Enhanced security: Integrate visa data with relevant agencies to improve screening.
This system, which was initially launched as a test program in 2019, was then gradually expanded to 59 embassies, consulates, and other diplomatic missions by October 20, 2024. It covered nations like India, Pakistan Laos, Kuwait, and Laos. This stage was dedicated to testing and optimising the system, ensuring a seamless implementation of the system in 2025.
Visa-free travel in 93 countries
For stays up to 60-days, travellers from 93 countries are still allowed entry into the country. This applies both for business and leisure travel. This policy was implemented on July 20, 2024.

Tourism and economy get a boost
Maris Sangiampongsa of Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the eVisa System is in line with a broader government plan to establish Thailand a leading international travel and business destination. Thailand hopes that this new development will improve its international competitiveness and attract more tourists. It also hopes to boost foreign investment.
According to records, Thailand recorded 26,6 million foreign arrivals in October 2024. That is a 30 percent increase over the previous year. The eVisa system will be crucial in reaching the 36.7 million target by year’s end.
