The international airport will upgrade its main runway to improve its operational efficiency and ensure passenger safety. The Thiruvananthapuram Airport Limited (TIAL), managed Adani Airport Holdings Limited(AAHL), a subsidiary to Adani Enterprises, is responsible for the recarpeting.
TIAL announced in a Wednesday release that the project is scheduled to be completed on March 29. It added that during the project, airlines operating out of the airport will schedule their flights before 9am and after 6.30pm.
TIAL stated that “during this period, airports will implement a comprehensive planning to ensure continuity of services as well as to minimize any potential inconveniences for passengers and airlines.”
It said that the runway, which is 3,374 meters long and 60 metres wide, was last recarpeted by 2017 and needed to be upgraded in order to maintain its optimal performance and reliability.
“A total of 3,48 lakh square meters, including the runway and taxiways will be recarpeted.”
The project also includes the upgrade of the Airfield Ground Lighting System (AGL) from Halogen to LED, the upgrading of airfield signs, and the installation of a stopbar light.
It was also stated that the airport would facilitate 96 flights per day during project work. It added that “certain flight schedules could be adjusted and passengers should check with their respective airline for any updates or modifications.”
