Orchha is a small town located in Madhya Pradesh that is rich in culture and history. Orchha, founded in 16th century by Raja Rudrapratap Singh, a Bundela Rajput ruler and the capital of the Bundela family, was the first town to be established. The town’s well-preserved cenotaphs and temples reflect a fascinating blend between Rajput and Mughal design.
Orchha was recommended for inclusion on the World Heritage List. The Indian High commissioner in Paris has handed over the dossier of nomination for 2027-2028. The rich heritage and culture of Orchha will get recognition at the international level – Principal Secretary Shri Shukla. A significant development in India’s cultural legacy the central government has accepted the dossier prepared by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board for the nomination of Orchha’s historic group of monuments to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Orchha has been recommended for inclusion on the prestigious list for 2027-2028. Vishal V. Singh, Indian Ambassador to UNESCO, officially submitted the dossier to Lazare Eloundou Assomo Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. After an official declaration from UNESCO, it will become the only World Heritage Site in India that is protected by the state.
Shri Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary Tourism and Culture and Director of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board stated that under the guidance and leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav unrelenting efforts are made towards preserving historical heritage and providing top-notch facilities for tourists.
PS Shri Shukla, expressing his happiness over the acceptance of this dossier by UNESCO, said that the dossier is a proud accomplishment for the cultural heritage and history of the state. Orchha’s unique architectural style and rich historic significance are well-known. The historic city will gain international recognition after its inclusion in World Heritage List. It will certainly become a major attraction to international tourists.
It is worth noting that the Central Government nominates a heritage of the nation every year to the UNESCO World Heritage List. In M.P. The World Heritage List currently includes the temple complexes of Khajuraho and Sanchi, as well as the rock shelters at Bhimbetka.
UNESCO World Heritage List includes 14 sites from the state. The permanent list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites includes the Khajuraho Temple Group, Bhimbetka Caves and Sanchi Stupa. The tentative list of UNESCO includes Gwalior Fort and Khuni Bhandara in Burhanpur. It also includes Bhojeshwar Mahdev Temple in Bhojpur. The valley includes Bhedaghat-Lametaghat, Satpura Tiger Reserve and Chanderi.
Success after a 5-year journey
The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board has prepared proposals to include Orchha in UNESCO’s Tentative List for 2019 and Bhedaghat on the list in 2021. Following a rigorous assessment process, the Archaeological Survey of India submitted these proposals to UNESCO. After this, the Tourism Board, in collaboration with expert organisations, prepared detailed dossiers on Orchha Mandu and Bhedaghat.
Global Recognition for India’s Heritage
Vishal V. Singh, the Indian Ambassador, said: “It’s a great honor to submit the nomination dossier of Orchha’s historic group monuments for consideration by the 2027-2028 World Heritage Committee session”. He expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India for their coordinated effort.
Vishal said that he was honoured to present to Lazare Eoundou Assomo the nomination dossier of the historic group of monuments at Orchha. The dossier will be considered by the World Heritage Committee 2027-2028.
He thanked the Archaeological Survey of India and the Madhya Pradesh State Government for their excellent coordination, as well as their officials, who had submitted the nomination dossier on time.

By submitting the Orchha nomination dossier, we hope to contribute to humanity’s shared heritage and promote global recognition for its unique cultural significance. He thanked UNESCO for its efforts and expressed his hope that World Heritage Committee would view the Orchha dossier favorably.
