The independent 4-star Trefeddian in Aberdovey is run by the family that has owned it for over 100 year. It is set against the rugged Cambrian Mountains, and faces the shimmering Cardigan Bay. It offers the perfect retreat for anyone seeking comfort and tranquillity amidst the scenic beauty of Wales‘ west coast.
Welcome to the Neighborhood
We parked in the car park of the Trefeddian Hotel following a scenic journey through the Welsh countryside. It was a short walk to the reception after parking, along a charming walkway adorned with vibrant pink and blue hydrangeas. We were greeted warmly at reception. We were asked if a morning newspaper would be delivered to our rooms, and we received instructions on how to find our room and where towels could be collected for the hotel pool.
The room
We stayed in the room 217. It was a spacious, family-friendly room that was bathed in natural light. It was perfect for our needs. The room featured a plush king size bed, while two cosy armchairs in a deep teal-blue fabric invited us to relax with a book or simply unwind. A comfortable sofa and coffee table provide enough seating for everyone.
The décor was traditional but elegant, giving off a homely vibe, with neutral tones. There is a large wardrobe for guests’ belongings as well as an area for a dressing table and desk.
Twin beds are located near the door of the room behind the partition. This is a very practical and well-thought out configuration, meaning that Mum and Dad can still stay up and have some separate ‘me time’, once the kids are safely tucked up in bed.
The room also comes with a balcony that offers views of both the hotel grounds and the breathtaking coastline beyond.
The bathroom
The en-suite bathroom has separate areas for WC, basins, baths, and showers, while the heated towel rack ensured our towels were always fluffy and warm.
The English Fine Fragrances collection of Sea Spray was provided as complimentary toiletries, including shampoo, body lotion, shower gel and a vanity kit.
What you need to know about planning your trip for 2024
The facilities
No reservations are required for dinner. You can enjoy a drink in the bar or lounge before dinner, or you can head straight to the elegant dining room between 6.50pm and 8:45pm. A table will be waiting for you. We were served five courses, with options for each. The following are the pictures of the vegetable spring roll served with sweet chili sauce, the baked tranche with haddock fillet topped with giant couscous spiced with herbs, and the trio with chocolate and pecan slices and praline ice-cream.
The hotel offers many other facilities that are excellent. The heated indoor swimming pool is probably the most notable. It is just long enough for an intense workout, but more suitable for a leisurely dip. There is a whirlpool for four people.
There is a games room nearby, with table tennis, pool and board games. Families can also enjoy the games, as there is a separate playroom for children. There’s also a putting green at the hotel and Aberdovey Golf Club – a links golf course with challenging, undulating greens and fairways – within walking distance.
The location
The Trefeddian Hotel, perched on a hill in the Snowdonia National Park is just a few minutes’ walk from Aberdovey Beach, which stretches miles. This is the perfect place for a relaxing evening stroll or a morning run. The town of Aberdovey – where the River Dovey meets Cardigan Bay – is quite charming, with quaint shops, cafés and a picturesque harbour. The kids will love building sandcastles on the jetty and paddling.
Under the jetty, a Time and Tide Bell chimes as the tide rises. This bell commemorates a legend of Cantre’r Gwaelod – a submerged realm beneath the bay that is the subject of a popular Welsh song telling of a ringing under the water. Within 10 miles of the hotel are the market town of Machynlleth, Dolgoch falls and Aberystywth. Dolgellau and Aberystywth are a little farther away. Maps with walks, drives and day trips in the area are available at the Hotel.
Other nice touches
The Trefeddian Hotel has made a number of thoughtful touches to ensure guests enjoy their stay. Our room had a good supply of complimentary tea, biscuits and coffee. This allowed us to enjoy a hot beverage without leaving our room.
In the common areas, guests could play chess or jigsaw, which was already underway. The outdoor putting-green was another attractive feature. Other thoughtful services included the option of having a packed meal prepared for the following morning. The fact that the hotel was dog-friendly was also a big plus for us.
The cost
Rates typically start from around £500 for a two night stay for two people, including dinner, bed and breakfast. From time to time, the hotel also runs offers, such as a recently advertised Autumn special starting from £690 for a 5-night break valid on stays between 29th September and 3rd November, so it is worth being on their mailing list. All guests who stay for the next 12 months will also receive a 5% reduction.
The best bit
The view was the best part of the Trefeddian Hotel. The views of the beach, rolling mountains and endless sky are always present, whether you’re enjoying a coffee in the lounge or a meal at the restaurant. We were lucky enough to be able enjoy a drink before dinner on the terrace just as the sun set. It was magical.
The final
We enjoyed our stay at theTrefeddian Hotel – it was very relaxing and served as an ideal base for us since we were attending an event in Aberdovey. While the hotel’s timeless charm seems to resonate most with older guests who visit year after, there are many facilities that appeal to families as well. You can be sure that your group will enjoy a peaceful getaway to explore the Welsh coast and countryside.
