Super Angel, the new chairlift at Banff Sunshine Village, will take you to the skies this winter. Super Angel, the first EVO six passenger heated luxury chairlift in North America, was built by Leitner Poma. The new Super Angel chairlift will replace the 35-year old quad chair Angel Express. Super Angel will open to skiers, snowboarders and snowboarders in November 2025.
“At Banff Sunshine we want to be worthy of being located in Canada’s very first National Park. As such, we are committed to investing in the guest experience. The new Super Angel will enhance our mountain resort experience for all visitors. The lift itself is a state-of-the-art, luxury experience equipped with direct drive technology, featuring a six-passenger, high-speed chair with heated bucket seats, footrests, and a yellow bubble cover,” says Kendra Scurfield, VP Brand & Communications at Banff Sunshine.
The new lift will serve terrain on Look Out Mountain. For the past 60+ years, guests have enjoyed the iconic terrain offered by Look Out Mountain (Delirium Dive, Angel Flight, & Piste Noir).
Super Angel is a third version of this popular lift. The original chair was a fixed-grip, two-passenger lift, built in 1960. The lift was upgraded into Angel Express in 1988, which is the first high-speed four-seater chair in Banff National Park. The high-speed quad chair revolutionized the way mountain skiers travelled.
The EVO technology developed by Leitner Poma is a direct-drive system that eliminates traditional gearboxes, resulting in a quieter and smoother ride. Construction on the Super Angel began on 13th May 2024. The larger size of the new Super Angel requires a wider lift and new towers. Guests can view the construction of Super Angel while exploring Sunshine Meadows in summer 2024.
Castle Mountain Resort is bringing old Angel back to life for all those who enjoyed her. Angel Express has been dismantled and moved to the resort in southern Alberta.
Scurfield says, “We all at Banff Sunshine look forward to staying toasty as we fly up and down the slopes in luxury.”
Super Angel Express is the resort’s (and Banff National Park’s) second heated luxury elevator.
