Emirates has announced their ambition to become a world-first Autism certified airline. This is a move that highlights its commitment to improving travel experiences for people with autism and sensory sensitivities. This initiative aims at making air travel more comfortable and accessible for passengers with autism and their families.
The airline will receive its Autism Certified Airlines designation from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards in the coming months. This follows a rigorous training and accreditation process for its ground staff and cabin crew.
The airline’s commitment towards inclusive travel is in alignment with the challenges faced by many individuals on the spectrum when navigating the sensory environment of air travel. AutismTravel.com found that many families were hesitant to travel when there was a lack of staff who are trained in autism awareness. Emirates has responded to these concerns by introducing new standards and services that will improve the on-ground as well as in-flight experience for these travellers.
In order to achieve this milestone, Emirates collaborated closely with IBCCES. They conducted extensive audits and research including surveys and interviews of people with autism, caregivers and healthcare experts. These data have led to the creation new industry standards which will guide airline staff on how to provide tailored support for passengers who have autism and sensory sensitivities.
More than 30,000 Emirates employees, including both cabin crew and ground staff, will undergo autism and sensory training. This will ensure that at least 80% are prepared to meet the needs of these passengers.
Emirates will continue to enhance the travel experience in 2025. This includes ‘sensory guides,’ digital tools designed to help travellers understand sensory inputs at various points during their journey. The airline also plans to provide sensory fidgets and aids to customers to help them manage stress and reduce self stimulatory behaviour.
Emirates’ efforts to make travel more accessible are not restricted to the sky. In April 2024, Emirates achieved the Certified Autism Center design for all four check-in areas at Dubai International Airport. Dubai International Airport became the first airport to achieve this certification in December.
These steps align with Dubai’s vision to be the first Certified Autism Destination of the Eastern Hemisphere. Emirates Airports, Dubai Tourism, and Dubai Tourism are working together to develop accessible travel initiatives.
